La madera petrificada es el resultado de un árbol que ha pasado completamente a piedra mediante el proceso de permineralización. Todos los materiales orgánicos (es decir, la madera) han sido reemplazados por minerales (principalmente un silicato, como el cuarzo), conservando al mismo tiempo la estructura original del tejido del tallo. Por tanto, la madera petrificada es una representación tridimensional del material orgánico original. Como la madera petrificada no es un material homogéneo, puede presentar grietas y agujeros naturales. Estos agujeros se rellenan con resina transparente o coloreada.
